Man Who Called 911 for Mental Health Emergency Help was Killed by Four LBPD Officers and His Family was Tormented for Hours After

Long Beach, CA – November 25, 2024

WHAT: The family of Brandon Boyd is demanding justice and accountability from the City of Long Beach Police Department after the victim called 911 for help and was consequently killed by four Long Beach Police officers. At the scene, three members of his family (two sisters and a niece) were brutalized, arrested, and forced to sit, handcuffed, facing Brandon’s slain body for hours. One sister sustained a fracture as a result of the police brutality and use of force.

WHO: Family members of Brandon Boyd will hold a press conference and will be present, along with friends, family, and Black Lives Matter Grassroots members from the Long Beach and Los Angeles chapters.

WHEN: The family will hold a press conference at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, a week after police stole his life.

WHERE: The press conference will be held near the church steps at 5200 Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach, CA, the site of Brandon’s murder, a church where he attended as a youth and was ultimately gunned down.

WHY: Brandon’s family wants answers and has issued the following demands to the City of Long Beach Police Department:

  • Release the 911 call that led to the incident

  • Release the names of all 4 officers involved

  • Release police worn body camera footage of what happened

  • Drop all charges against the family members who were arrested and brutalized

  • Charge the officers who killed Brandon

The family, community members, and BLM Grassroots Long Beach Chapter also want a review of LBPD's policies and protocols regarding responses to calls for mental health crisis support.

HOW: The community can support Brandon’s children and his funeral expenses at the Family’s GoFundMe page at bit.ly/brandonboydgofundme. Community members are invited to attend the December BLM Long Beach Chapter hybrid meeting on Thursday, December 5th at 6pm and can find more info at www.blmlongbeach.org/news.
